Really useful tool for improving scores on MCAT CARS section. The passages were challenging, and the approaches presented were beneficial.

As a former MCAT taker I found this book to be invaluable. The texts are just as hard as the real thing and follow the same format. While not all of the questions asked perfectly reflect the real exam (which is true of any product from any test company), most of them are similar. This is a great start for those training for the verbal section of the MCAT exam.

What I really liked about this book was its comprehensive practice and explanations for the passages. The book starts out with familiarization of several different techniques that students use on the MCAT CARS section. What I believe is most helpful and extremely beneficial here (and what I gained the most from) is their emphasis that no one strategy is best. We, as MCAT takers, should practice all of them in depth to give us a sense of what we like most. The variety and extent of practice passages in the different half sections in this book give us great opportunity to practice different strategies to see what works best for us. In addition, they provide detailed explanations to better understand and give us the tools to guide ourselves to the correct answer.I definitely recommend this book for anyone taking the MCAT.

Great guide for the verbal section of the new MCAT. This is the second book that I have purchased with NextStep test prep - great books. The only thing is there is no color so the book looks a little boring. However, I found the explanations and tools in the appendices really helpful.

The approach to verbal here makes all the difference! Unlike other MCAT books, this book doesn't just push one strategy. It defines several methods for you, and then you use practice and tracking to find the right method for you.

I've gone through all the mcat test prep books. This is the only book that annotates everything from passage summary, key terms, main ideas, and reasoning for each question answer from front to back. I always wanted annotated passage guide.. and I'm really happy that they provided explanations for all the questions.

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) studied literature, art history, and philosophy in both Munich and Prague and is often considered one of the German language's greatest twentieth-century poets. Charlie Louth is a fellow at Queen's College, Oxford, where he lectures in German. He is the author of Hölderlin and the Dynamics of Translation. Lewis Hyde is the author of the hundred-million-copy bestseller The Gift. A MacArthur fellow and former director of undergraduate creative writing at Harvard University, Hyde is a fellow at Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society. Would give this a "0" stars if possible. This vendor is NOT selling the publication of Rilke's book, but has gotten the text and laid it out (probably with MS Word, horrible for layout) and done a cheap printing of it. Am I going to return it? Probably not, only because it's more effort to pack it, take it to the P.O. and mail. But I'm very angry about this book, I do publication layout professionally, and am an editor, so the extra spaces between words, the dropped punctuation, and visually awful layout is an abomination to Rilke's work. I know how they did it: they stripped the text out of an e-book, put it into Word and left-aligned, never proofed it, and sent it to China to be printed. Monstrous. Never buy from this outfit.

Whatever kind of writer or creative artist you are, Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet is a voice worth listening to. The letters were written in the early 1900s when Rilke was about 30 years old. He wrote ten letters to a young poet named Franz Kappus, offering not only advice but a philosophy on how to cultivate the creative spirit. As a fiction author with three novels out, I often get discouraged. We writers know that art and struggle go hand and hand. I’ve read all the pep blogs about following your passion and keeping the faith, recognizing the common Van Gogh blues, blah, blah, blah. Rilke’s book is such a refreshing look at why a person writes at all. He addresses doubt, loneliness vs solitude, love, and patience. This is probably one of the most impressive of books I’ve read on this subject. The thoughts in this little 100-page book is a true source and one to keep on the night stand. I love to open a page at random and see what Rilke has to say to me for the day. Page 61 told me this morning that “We must embrace struggle. Every living thing conforms to it. Everything in nature grows and struggles in its own way, establishing its own identity, insisting on it at all cost, against all resistance.” This book is for any artist who wants inspiration on how to live as an artist.

Louth's translation of Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet is a mediocre translation, does not match that of M.D. Herter Norton's (Letters to a Young Poet), whose quintessential translation must be the standard for all others of Rilke's work. You cannot see it the following pages in the Look Inside feature, but the following famous passage in Letter 8 is an excellent example. "Mr. Kappus," the young poet, might as well be us, and the passage can be read without the words "dear Mr. Kappus" and stands alone -- at least in the M.D. Herter Norton translation.M.D. Herter Norton's translation (Letters to a Young Poet), Letter 8, reads: "How should we be able to forget those ancient myths that are the beginning of all peoples? The myths about dragons that, at the last moment, turn into princesses. Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses, who are only waiting to see us, once beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything terrible is, in its deepest being, something helpless that wants help from us. So, you must not be frightened, dear Mr. Kappus, if a sadness rises up before you, larger than any you have ever seen. If a restiveness like light and cloud-shadows, passes over your hands and over all you do. You must think that something is happening to you. That life has not forgotten you. That it holds you in its hand. It will not let you fall. Why do you want to shut out of your life any agitation, any pain, any melancholy, since you do really do not know what these states are working upon you? ..."Compare this to Charlie Louth's translation of this same passage in Letter 8 (Letters to a Young Poet):"How can we forget those ancient myths found at the beginnings of all peoples? The myths about the dragons who at the last moment turn into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses, only waiting for the day when they will see us handsome and brave? Perhaps everything terrifying is deep down a helpless thing that needs our help. So, dear Mr. Kappus, you shouldn't be dismayed if a sadness rises up in front of you, greater than any you have ever seen before; or if a disquiet plays over your hands and over all your doings like light and cloud-shadow. You must think that something is happening with you; that life has not forgotten you; that it holds you in its hand; it will not let you fall. Why should you want to exclude from your life all unsettling, all pain, all depression of spirit, when you don't know what work it is these states are performing within you? ... "Note that word order in changed in by Louth to give a different meaning, and this is often the case.Also, compare to Stephen Mitchell's translation of the passage in Letter 8 (Letters to a Young Poet (Modern Library) and (Letters to a Young Poet):"How could we forget those ancient myths that stand the beginning of all the races, the myths about dragons that are at the last moment transformed into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love. So you mustn't be frightened, dear Mr. Kappus, if a sadness rises up in front of you, larger than any you have ever seen; if an anxiety, like light and cloud-shadows, moves over your hands and over everything you do. You must realize that something is happening to you, that life has not forgotten you, that it holds you in its hand and will not let you fall. Why to you want to shut out of your life any uneasiness, any misery, any depression. since after all you don't know what work these conditions are doing inside you?...."Really, "that wants our love"? Our LOVE? No reason for this translator's license, none at all. Mitchell's translation likewise strips the Letters of poetry, and, of note, his introduction to the Letters is somewhat bizarre.If one goes further back in this letter, to Rilke's discussion of solitude, the demarcation between the beautiful and the mediocre translation is equally clear. I find M.D. Herter Norton's translation by far the most beautiful, poetic and meaningful, although reading other translations can add to the reader's understanding, or else, show the reader which translation speaks to him.On the other hand, here is an opportunity to compare, free of charge, three translations. I have chosen to confine myself to the translation by M.D. Herter Norton's of Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, since I don't want to interrupt the flow of reading as I study these great letters, and feel it is best to choose one. It is a shame the M.D. Herter Norton translation is not currently in print in hardcover. Still, there are used copies to be found and I'd rather buy several paperback copies of Norton's than have a nice looking hardcover of a mediocre translation.

I loved it! It reminded of the literature I had to read many years ago, when I was in college. Notice I wrote the verb "had". I am feeling a little guilty of not appreciating the works I had to read, then, and puzzled, by how I admire them now. The content of these letters are timeless. "It is perhaps no use now to reply to your actual words; for what can I say about your disposition to doubt or about your inability to bring your outer and inner life into harmony, or about anything else that oppresses you-: it is always what I have said before; always the wish that you might be able to find patience enough in yourself to endure, and a single-heartedness enough to believe; that you might win increasing trust in what is difficult, and in your solitude among other people. And for the rest, let life happen to you. Believe me:life is right, at all events".I think it reads like a prayer. I have no knowledge of the German Language, but if this translation conjures this kind of emotion, imagine the impact it should have on the reader that reads the original.Thank you!

Thought it was a more full book... not a children's book... will be donating it to our library...

This was nothng like I expected it to be. It's written like it was for a grade school child. Th facts are sparce. I was very disappointed.

I was really dissappointed in this book. I did not realize that it was such a small book with littel info. on her life and times. I expected a much larger version with more iinformation. It might go into a library for the young child.

I only bought this for the photos as I'm very interested in Cynthia Ann Parker. It definitely isn't worth $9 even with the photos. Only a few pages of text in very large print - for the blind perhaps?

This book isn't all that bad. The print is larger for easier reading for grade school kids. It has color maps, color reproductions of Catlin Comanche paintings, and B&W era photos and art. This is not an in-depth biography. This is a book for young children which should/could cause them to read more advanced books on Cynthia and her son Quanah when they are ready. Perfectly fine for its intended audience, IMHO.

I'll end my review with an example of how I analyse things like this now.Recently someone came to me proposing a project for building a math-education website - combining math explanations and machine learning algorithms, connecting you with the best explanation given your background knowledge. And of my first 3 thoughts, 2 were about how the site would function and how a user would interact with it - it's important to concretely visualise a product to figure out if it feels like it would work. However, my 3rd thought was to do an adequacy analysis - I looked for data points about whether I should expect that, if this is a good idea that can work, why hasn't someone already done it? Think about all the money and time people spend on education each year - all the tutors in universities, all the teachers in high schools, all the assistant lecturers and support staff and government subsidies. Surely, if this project was a good idea, someone would've built it and it would be a common website we all use. Is the fact that this doesn't exist already enough evidence that it won't work?In general I don't see the educational marketplace of resources changing rapidly in response to new tech and research. There was a bunch of research about spaced repetition and how memorisation works, that nobody has jumped to incorporate into how universities work. Many people can tell you the best physics/math textbooks (e.g. Feynman Lectures) but most students will never read them. It *doesn't* look to me like a space where it would require a great deal of effort to out-do the best in the field. You might counter by pointing out the success of Khan Academy, but personally I'm not sure I'd consider the fact that a single dad can make lots of videos and do better than everyone else, a sign of success for the educational market.I'm not actually very confident in this analysis. However, the best part is that I can learn about the whole field by working on the one project. If the project fails, or I find out that someone else has tried this and failed, then I'll change my assessment of other projects in this space. On the other hand, if the project succeeds, I will update about how good the educational market is at incentivising people to create useful things like this.I wouldn't have made these models and hypotheses before, and for that reason I'm really glad I read this book.

Spends too much time arguing against "modest epistemology", but the insights on when and why our social systems can be systematically broken, with nobody able to fix them, make this book well worth reading and pondering.

Equity markets are efficient in the sense that all stock prices instantly adjust to new information--there are no genuine bills on the ground waiting to be picked up. Thus it is feasible for a mere decision theorist to correctly diagnose problems with the Bank of Japan's monetary policy, even though the BoJ is run by domain experts.How is this possible? And why do some people insist that it is not possible?It is possible because (a) the BoJ governor cannot personally profit handsomely by making correct monetary policy, and (b) an outsider who lacks object-level expertise can still possess meta-level expertise, allowing him to correctly identify worthy object-level experts whose opinions to trust.Some people insist this is not possible, and that adjusting your beliefs to those of a wider reference class is always preferable. They do this at least in part because of status-related emotions.This book is basically an extended meditation on why EY should not have to quit his contrarian ways just because of Aumann's theorem. That's putting it glibly. It's actually pretty insightful and a quick read.

I loved the part explaining housing bubbles. As a bit of a real estate nerd that was a valued insight. I personally do not experience modest epistemology much myself,but when I do witness it there does not seem to be a universal epistemological adoption by the individual expressing it. I think this is common in the Midwest, where people seem to oscillate wildly from modest epistemology “We can’t possibly understand God’s plan” to arrogant epistemology “I could turn this economy around with a few simple tweaks to the budget”. I’m not sure what demographic the author interacts with that adheres so entirely to modesty, but I haven’t met many of them. As an entrepreneur I appreciated the balanced insight.

The first half of the book is outstanding, in identifying clearly the causes of suboptimal situation in the world we live in. The second half of the book disappoints as the narrative borders on meandering.

The easy to read discussion on a pressing topic that constantly sparks heated debate is refreshing. I learned a lot about myself and the world.
