Jaxon Grant has written a book that is beyond awesome! Life of a College Bandsman is not a good book but a GREAT book. Any Jaxon Grant fan will tell you that it's obvious, pretty much from the first few parts of the book, that he is having fun with the story, writing something he believes and experienced, care about the development of the characters and above all, writing a story that has a purpose. In Life of a College Bandsman, Jaxon delivers a book with contemporary significance because it has relevance to problems and issues that are current with young black gay men today: Love Sexual Tension, Romance, Identity Crisis, Friendships, Acceptance, Ignorance, Epiphanies and Turning points in one's life. Life of a College Bandsman tells the story of Zach Finley who begins to experience life as a young black male at Florida A&M University who wants to become a member of the Marching 100. While in his first semester at FAMU, Zach's essential foundation (His grandmother's words of wisdom and protection) is challenged by his interactions with Chaz McDaniel, his covert boyfriend and band leader at FAMU, Ra'Jon Harris, his nemesis and band director at FAMU, Quinton Washington, his section leader and tormenter at FAMU. While Zach is emotionally and physically drained dealing with those gentlemen and rigorous band practices, Zack find an ally in Dwight Taylor, his best friend, romantic crush and band member. Although this book primarily deals with Zach and his conflicts, Jaxon manages to throw in a smorgasbord of testosterone and sex as the reader gets to see that the main characters and sub-characters currently or previously had sexual encounters. I was blown away by all of the revelations. It only added to the sensual allure of this terrific book. This book is highly entertaining and Jaxon secures crucial elements that make this book exceedingly successful: 1) Well developed characters that are believable and reminds me of people that I actually know. 2) Plenty of action from beginning to end. I could not put this book down because the action just kept coming. 3) A great plot that had me guessing of what's to come. Jaxon used surprising and realistic plot twists from beginning to end. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen - BAM - a new twist surfaced. 4) This book was an enjoyable read. I was able to forget my problems because I was drawn into the story. I had an emotional and personal connection to the characters. I truly could relate to them. 5) Jaxon writes about what he knows. He brings his experiences to life through the characters. As such, I was thrown into that world and could not leave. 6) Jaxon has written a book that is timeless. I can read it again and again and be entertained once more. 7) This book is unique because it delivers snappy, authentic dialog with young and quirky characters that will probably grow as a result of conflicts surrounding the nature of love. This book is not to be missed! Well done, Jaxon!!!! I am anxiously waiting for book 2 - Life of a College Bandsman: Is the love. Again, the book is beyond awesome!
Hell on Earth is the perfect subtitle for this fourth installment of Life of a College Bandsman Series. Jaxon Grant deserves much praise for writing a novel that blends many forms of devastating life lessons for many characters that tests their endurance, spiritual growth and faith. HELL ON EARTH proves just that for Zach, Dwight, Tony and Micah as each man takes a personal journey through mourning and accepting loss; illness; guilt and fear and surrendering to what can't be changed. First, Zach faces the death of three close family members and a ex-lover and friend within a short time of one another. I have to admit that I did not see nor expect the death of Zach's ex-lover and friend. I was shocked! Jaxon really through me for a loop with that storyline. However, it made the book more touching and memorable because it reminds me that not everyone is going to stay in our lives forever. When that person moves on in death or just out of touch, we still have to keep moving and thank that person for being a part of our lives for the purpose of our souls growth. We have to expect the unexpected. It's all part of life. Meanwhile as Zach endure and weather the storm of losing so many loved one's via death, Dwight finally faces his fears and guilt and admits that he is in love with Zach. Jaxon has written that part of the story so masterfully that it plays like a beautiful song. It is tender, romantic and different. Yet, it could be the end of their beautiful song as each man attempts to sort through their different relationship that goes beyond the physical. While Zach and Dwight work on their relationship/friendship, Tony deals with devastating news of life changing illness that interferes with his dreams of playing professional football. All of this is beating Tony down but then he gets more than he bargained for when he has to step up and become a single father. Tony cannot change the circumstance of his sudden condition but will he accept what he cannot change. Micah on the other hand is faced with horrible consequences of his indulging in drugs and a hidden lifestyle that leads him on a road of destruction that leaves horrified family members to pick of the pieces. Although this book focuses on tragic and devastating situations, I see the duality of those situations of creating a Heaven on Earth that requires that we live life without regret, without fear, with inner peace and accepting what cannot be changed. Jaxon has effortlessly mirrored that logic by letting the characters move on in their lives by focusing on the greater things that are awaiting them as they move beyond college to begin the next chapters of their lives. This is such a wonderful and thought-provoking book. As usual Jaxon delivers his trademark of a well-written, highly sensual and sexual characters that are well developed and explosive action. When I look at the big picture between the pages of this book, I see that it is aligned with spiritual undertones which is truly dynamic in the sense that it reminds me that happiness is a state of mind and that God/Universe is working on us so that we can accept each tragic situation as a blessing for the soul to grow. Thanks Jaxon for allowing Gods personal message for me to be revealed in your book. It's and incredible feeling! Well, on to book Five...
This installment was a shocker to me. I was ready for Dwight to actually come to terms with the fact that he is in love with Zack but when he did it wasn't satisfying. I understand that he wants to protect their friendship which is the most important but come on Dwight, you are confusing the s*** out of that boy. Knowing Jaxon I'm sure that won't be the end of them! I was afraid to continue reading at some points bc people just kept dying. I was like damn, Im surprised Zack wasn't suicidal with all the death going on. The real eye opener was Micah! I felt so bad for him but some people just can't cope. I was happy to see that most of the characters got it together and found love but I still feel like there is some sexual tension between Will and Zack. Im ready for book 5. Bring it on! Great job Jaxon.
I was waiting for this to come out and the wait was definitely worth it! Let me first say the book has 100 chapters which is something I love and it keeps you engaged! Secondly the characters had me feeling all kinds of emotions. I can relate to most of them am I also played in the band which made it more relate-able! I am ready for the next book now. I have to know what becomes of Dwight and Zach and Chaz! Eric told Zach the deal and now it has come to pass! Please don't take too long to release the next book!
I'm a fan of Jaxon Grant and i've enjoyed all of his books so far. I can't believe how i become so attached to the characters!! However, I'm disappointed in the Zach and Dwight relationship reveal. It's like you're reading and awaiting for something that never happened. My excitement quickly disappeared once they had their moment. I'll also add that the tragedy of a major character left me disappointed just like Incidental Contact. Bring on book 5!!! More drama and hopefully a happy ending!
