Fuyuzora Kogarashi hasn’t had the normal life. Cursed with being possessed by spirits throughout his upbringing, Kogarashi’s dealt with abandonment, scorn, and living his life under trees. Thanks to meeting a sensei to control his psychic powers, however, he’s managed to live as best he can. One day though, an opportunity arrives — he ends up exorcising a spirit teasing a couple. One of those people happens to suggest he take residence at the boarding house Yuragisou. For Kogarashi, he’s looking for something cheap, and with the following available: No initial costs No guarantor A hot spring Rent is cheap as heckHe was not going to pass it up. However, there’s a reason this is the case: the house is haunted. Cue tragic backstory of how it got to that state! But as Kogarashi discovers, it’s not just the ghost Yuuna that’s going to affect him — it’s the four other female residents that live there too. All of them happen to be monsters (or a demon slayer shinobi), and one of them threatens to end his life almost every time. Needless to say, he quickly discovers why no one bothers to stay there. Too bad he needs a place to stay…Before actually discussing the content of Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs, it’s important to note a few things. For starters, this is a Weekly Shonen Jump title that’s NOT in VIZ’s hands. And as this title grew in popularity in Japan, it didn’t seem likely it’d get licensed since VIZ didn’t want it. That’s where Seven Seas comes in, as they were able to grab the license for this. However, rather than release it straight up (like say Freezing or Monster Musume), they created an imprint specifically for titles like this (Ghost Ship).After reading it, I’m not sure why…?I said the same thing with To-Love Ru, though Darkness I know for sure belonged, and Yokai Girls is also a worthy one as well. Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs? Not so much, at least not yet. It’s essentially Love Hina + any supernatural manga, but hey, you can see nipples. There’s the usual harem antics of main dude accidentally touching the girls due to no fault of his own (except one), with some background information peppered at points throughout volume 1. All in all, it doesn’t do that much to differentiate itself from others of its type.But it does manage to be more thoroughly entertaining than most!I think one reason for that is the strong localization of this work. Whether Yuuna was supposed to remind me of Velma I dunno, but there’s a lot of really strong dialogue that helps showcase the characters and livens situations up. You still have the same general personalities in most harems, like the sultry, buxomed oni (yes, oni) who gets drunk to the cat possessed by a nekogami that says her name as she speaks, but it reads super well. With that and how clumsy Yuuna overall is, it’s a combination that works very well.The stories themselves are fairly simple too, as Kogarashi and Yuuna try and discover a way she can pass on. Since the series is ongoing it’ll take a while before that happens, but in that case, you hope the journey will be good. I guess having to fight possessed stuffed animals is questionable, but having a zashiki-warashi use up all the luck of divine monks to chase them away is pretty funny. All in all, there aren’t that many harems that are super great, but Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs is very much worth your time.
This series is close to overtaking To Love-ru Darkness as my favorite manga of all time. If you enjoy ecchi, harem series then I cannot recommend this enough. I own ten of the volumes in Japanese, while I don't necessarily love the topical references and puns in the English translation, I am glad that it is being distributed for more to enjoy. This should be alongside To Love-ã‚‹ and Monster Musume in any ecchi enthusiast's collection. I know that I did a lot of comparing in this short review, but I do not want that to detract from the heart of this series. The main point of the comparison is to show that it is a return to form for the genre, while feeling fresh and interesting. Keep them coming Seven Seas Entertainment.
Honestly, the only gripe I have is in the beginning chapters when Yuuna (eponymous character) used Scooby-Doo lingo like "Jinkies". I get that there is a common theme of the paranormal, but it just feels so out of place in a JAPANESE MANGA. It does nothing more than show the editor's age and dispel the illusion of a well-translated Japanese series.
I'm happy to see Yuragi no Yuuna-san get an official English release. It's a really cute storyline and this volume is a great introduction to the characters. You know what to expect from the genre, but the characters still feel flushed out regardless. The art is great; the ecchi is done well and every page is nice to look at. Chisaki, Yuuna, and Sagiri are easily my favorite girls.
Monster girl manga is a favorite of mine, so it was not surprising when late last year, Amazon started bringing up this title. The cover certainly attracted me and the premise sounded great. When I learned I could get it a few days ahead of schedule, I placed an order. The only worry? Would Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs live up to the expectations I had given it? The answer is a happy yes; I am giving it 4.5 stars and I think if the next volumes are like the opener, it will be a fine series. We start with Kogarashi, amateur psychic who exorcises spirits with his fists. He needs a place to live and if he can rid a hot springs inn of a ghost, he'll be living rent-free. The problem comes when he meets the ghost, Yuuna. She's cute, sweet and Kogarashi's not the sort of guy who hits girls. It turns out the other ladies living there are also of paranormal nature and that comes in handy as there are some nasty monks who have plans for Yuuna. Kogarashi and Yuuna have their difficulties. When Yuuna gets upset, her poltergeist abilities kick in, with surprising results. The two decide to go on a date, but overlook the fact that normal people can't see Yuuna and think Kogarashi's an odd chap, always talking to himself. Finally, Kogarashi knows a ghost can't stay earthbound forever without risks, so one day, Yuuna will have to pass to the beyond. The stories are nice and the cast is a good one. It will be interesting to see how they develop. There is a lot of fan service, but that's to be expected with a Ghost Ship title. If the quality stays strong, Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs should be a popular title with monster girl fans.
I didn't realize it was going to be as fanservice-filled as it is, but it's still a cute story with an interesting premise. Will probably check out at least vol. 2.
Main character is good hearted. Supporting cast is zanny enough to keep the action going in a love hina like story.
This series is cute, the fan-service is not over-done, just NICE!
