Admittedly I am not a computer geek. I know enough to get me by and that's about it, but having website and running into some issues that kept telling me there was a java issue I knew I needed to Learn something about it. This book explained things and help me make sense of it enough that I'm no longer terrified of addressing the issue. Its explained in a way that I could understand which was a huge plus.
Took a flier on this because I have a young nephew about to do computer camp and "basic" was in the title. Wasn't expecting much for two bucks but this book still under-delivered. There is essentially no reason for this book to be in your library unless a) you have never programmed in *any* language before and b) you can't spend (literally) just a couple hours of your Java journey online, reading the free online docs like the Java tutorial on the Oracle site.Half this thing is tedious, repetitive examples of variable assignments. You know you're in trouble when you are 85% of your way through the book and you just started loops. Even kids these days, tech savvy as they are, tend to be past this stuff by lunch on day 1. Save your two bucks.
I know this book is great for beginner because I am a beginner and this book was a godsend for me. I was working on a project at work in which Java was being used and this book provided the basic understanding that I needed. It is very well written and filled with examples that make it easier for a novice to understand the central concepts. This book was extremely helpful
I have now worked my way through many of Nathan's books. I really appreciate his style of teaching and how he formats his books. They are easy to go back and reference them when I get struck. I started using his books to refresh my past program lessons. Now I know what I can expect with Nathan's books and have no problem quickly coming up to speed.
