.... another great architecture book if you're a resident of the Los Angeles area or planning a visit. For as young as our country is we sometimes overlook the fact that a 100 years is a 100 years.... a very long time. That being said it’s amazing that here in Los Angeles....a city that is constantly evolving (or chasing the next big thing) we still have numerous examples of great mansions that have been kept up with the dignity they deserve.... or restored to that level. This book shows some great examples of the homes that some of Los Angeles’s biggest "mover & shakers" lived in.
This is a great coffee table book. Not obnoxiously large or heavy (books like that tend to never be read as people are intimidated to even lift them!). Unlike some of the other architectural books of LA, the photos in this book are contemporary, thus they are all in color. The styles presented have a little something for everyone...everything from Spanish to craftsman/arts and crafts to French regency to Georgian revival. In a city where so much of the architecture is mid-century modern, this book does a beautiful job of illustrating the wide variety of fabulous architecture that still exists in hidden pockets. Many thanks to the author/publisher. Please consider a second volume exploring even more of the undercelebrated architecture of LA...I will be your first customer!
the longer I live the more I appreciate Los Angeles architecture. The early 20th Century design is tightly disciplined and elegant. I worked on restoration of a building designed by Paul Revere Williams, his theatrical (read movie) staging for his clients and the moving triumph as the first black architect licensed is credited by seeing his fine buildings.
Los Angeles has some of the most gorgeous historical houses anywhere and this is a great book with stunning photos of many of them. It has a lot of photos and is well made. Great coffee table book.
I liked the book very much--the photos are outstanding--many of the "classic" mansions and historical homes you have read about inGehard & Winter architectural guide to Los Angeles-- example: Gamble House in Pasadena, Adamson homes in Hancock Park and Malibu-- to name a few.
Very beautiful homes to browse at leisure. A collection of current designs that are beautiful. Very beautiful photography.
Classic Homes of Los Angeles is a wonderful coffee table book that no architectural nut should be without. The photos are crisp, and there are pages and pages of to spend hours basking in. I recommend this book without one reservation whatsoever.
