Despite a few glitches, there is much to like about this coauthored novel from Tenney, best known for his nonfiction book The God Chasers, and Olsen, a writer whose work includes screenplays. Esther, queen of Persia, who inspired the eponymous book of the Bible, is a fascinating character whose story lends itself well to a fictional retelling. The novel opens as a contemporary woman named Hadassah receives a letter penned by Esther (also called "Hadassah" and "Star" in the novel) and passed down through her family for generations. The reading of the letter transports the reader back to the Persian Empire (a similar device is used in Bodie and Brock Thoene's Zion Legacy series). Several time periods and points of view make for a slow start, but the pacing picks up when Esther becomes the focus. The dialogue is stiff in places, and some readers will find the use of "G-d" rather than "God" out of reverence rather tiresome. However, from their imaginative fleshing out of Esther's unusual girlhood and preparation for her tryst with the king to the uttering of her famous words, "If I perish, I perish," the authors reinvigorate an age-old story. The sexual tension and violence necessary to the tale are rendered inoffensive for the evangelical Christian market, and a few surprise twists will catch readers familiar with the story off-balance. One of the finest books I have ever read (or had read to me)! This book is superbly written, and takes the reader into history during a time as pivotal as our own and puts you into that place and time first person. Thank you Tommy Tinney for a book that you cannot put down, and a walk through such a rich piece of history!
I read this book before the movie ever came out. As usual....the book was amazingly better than the movie. If you disliked the movie like I did, don't give up until you try the book!!!
I have read a lot of books about Esther, written from her point of view. This has been my favorite so far. Yes, there have been things added to the book that aren't in the account in the Bible, but that is what helps the characters feel like that real people that they were.
Very violent period of time. You can read the book of Esther in the Bible and learn the story. This author just fills in the blanks and makes it easier to read and more enjoyable. He did a good job but reading about this period of history is difficult. Women were treated badly and the violence is horrendous.
This is a beautiful retelling of the story of Purim--the story of Esther, queen of Persia, who saved God's people from annihilation when a man named Haman, like Hitler in more recent history, tried to do the same thing. Because of Esther and her family member and childhood guardian, Mordecai, being willing to do what was necessary in a time of great danger, a people was saved and years later, from them, the Messiah was born.
Let me be the one to say, if you purchase this book you will be so please. Tommy Tenney did an excellent job writing this novel. I couldn't put it down. I read it in 2 days. I would have been done soon but I still had to take care of my responsiblites. I love the story of Esther and the novel made me love it the more. I was so grateful that the novel and the movie followed the bible. The movie was done almost to perfection. I saw the movie twice. I saw it for the second time when I was almost finished with the novel. That alllowed me to see all the little details that I missed the first time. I believe it is an excellent novel.
I love Christian historical fiction and this is one of the best books I have read. I have not read anything by this author previously. I will read him again. I had trouble putting it down most of the book. Excellent read!!
I was glued to this book until I could finish every last morsel. It is a truly delightful retelling of an ancient story but from a perspective totally different than ever before shared. Live in the moment and follow the Queen's wisdom!
