I talk about how The Tower, the Zoo, and the Tortoise is the funniest book you will ever read about losing a child, which of course, sounds crazy. Well this book is the funniest book you will ever read about surviving breast and prostate (her father) cancer. In both cases I think it's because nobody can make you both laugh and cry like a good humor writer. You know you shouldn't be laughing, but you can't help it, because the writing is just so good, so insightful, and of course, so funny. But a big part of that is that while beast cancer is the overarching theme of this book, it's really about Kelly Corrigan's family, and what a family they are. Still, it's the wit and wisdom of Corrigan that makes this book so good. It reminds me a little bit of another book that I loved, called Funny in Farsi. Both writers lure you in with what seems like a mundane tale about their wild and crazy families, only to deliver a laugh out loud punch line at the end. A huge thumbs up.
I enjoyed every single page of this beautiful story! My sister had recommended a different book by this author. But I always feel the need to start with their first book. Even though this isn't a series, it's just what I do. I had no idea it was her story of cancer. If I would have known, I surely would have skipped it. My last 3 books read(not all on purpose): "When Breath Becomes Air" 5stars "The Bright Hour" 4stars, And, "The Best of Us" 5stars. All 4 are people dealing with cancer. I have enjoyed them all. The Middle Place is funny, sad, and so honest. KELLY CORRIGAN TELLS IT LIKE IT IS, in a way that made me feel like I was with her the entire time. I felt like I could walk up to her family, as if they would know me. I like her style of writing, and absolutely loved this book, and Greenie too! I am onto her next book "Lift"
I hate to say someone’s life story isn’t interesting but I know so many people with breast cancer so maybe this book seemed too run of the mill. It was a quick read though and I hope the author and her Dad are well
I enjoyed reading this story but the epilogue was so poignant and real. A tribute to a generation of hard-working mothers with good parenting skills.
Loved this special book where Kelly showed her warts with no hesitation. I snort laughed while reading. She was full on with her joy, her fears, her life.
A good story teller - as a breast cancer survivor I cried and laughed. She tells it like it really is
I loved this story of life and strength, family and love. The Middle Place helped me to appreciate even more deeply the spirit of a young woman - Kelly Corrigan - who, like my beloved daughter, had to surrender to her baldness and her new identity post diagnosis. This kind of "put your feet down on the floor every morning" living takes enormous courage and humor. It all comes through in this memoir. It also takes sheer guts to write about a journey that is both scary and unpredictable while making oneself vulnerable in the process. It's also the truth that sets the spirit free.Kelly Corrigan loves her enthusiastic and attentive father. I loved mine for similar reasons. Daughters who are this cherished by their dads survive things. Kelly also had to beat her cancer while her own father battled his. Watching it outside; experiencing it inside, all this while raising her precious children. Speaking of which, every mother will adore reading about the tender moments of mom and child, those quiet, gorgeous times that we sigh, "I love being a mom"! I think of Kelly's mom and siblings here with seeing two people they loved going through treatments at the same time. What faith this family must have.I enjoyed meeting Kelly's husband on the page. A spouse who is our port in the storm - when the waves are rocking and rolling the boat - is a blessing from heaven above. There is a refreshing authenticity in The Middle Place because Kelly Corrigan rips the face right off pretension with her humor and story-telling ability so I say high five on this book. I say bravo to this young and very gifted writer.Mary Jane Hurley BrantPsychotherapistBryn Mawr, PA
Someone said every book is ultimately about death. That thought applies to Kelly Corrigan's memoir, The Middle Place. Corrigan, a young wife and mother in her thirties faces her own mortality with a breast cancer diagnosis. At the same time she desperately strategizes with her family of origin to find the best treatment for her beloved father, also diagnosed with cancer. She is caught in the middle place between protecting her children and her father. Death is the centerpiece of this plot. The reader wants cures for both of these wonderful people. But Corrigan balances grim facts with wit and humor. Her voice is chatty and intimate. She brings life and love to the pages with portraits of her father, her funny brothers, her long-suffering mom, her darling husband and two cute kids. Corrigan takes time to honor those she loves with words. Her texts brim with specificity and life. She doesn't leave out the struggles. When she is jealously annoyed to find her husband Edward talking on the phone to his parents, she knows she is being irrational and unfair. Her husband's kindness and acceptance of her craziness makes the reader love him even more. Corrigan contrasts her love for her father, which is total and unrestrained, to the love for her mother which has limits. She shows real life, and flawed people coming together in crisis. Most of us try to keep thoughts of our inevitable demise in check, but with Kelly and her family the reality of death is too clearly defined by results from the medical lab. While the reader cannot deny the pain of this memoir, Corrigan finds irony. With death as the initial plot Corrigan writes about life. She spells out the details of everyday life and relationships, not death. She lives life with humor and passion even as she is faced with dying. Each day matters. Each relationship matters. This facing-death memoir is really about life.
