This book made me run the gamut if emotions from joy, to anger, to disbelief, to faith, to love, to grief. Those and so many more. Was this book a fantasy? In a sense. Magical realism would be a more accurate moniker, specially the first half. What do you call a book filled with dreams that are real, and a guardian angel come don from On High?As always, the prose was absolutely lovely. Lyrical and descriptive, TJK tells us this story through flashbacks, dreams, and a magical reality that threatens to drown our MC Benji beneath a river of grief.I kept putting this book off because I didn’t want to read about loss and sacrifice. And yes, this book is one of grief, but it’s one of love, of moving forward, of standing strong. It’s also a book about faith. After all, an angel falls from the sky. I truly enjoyed the debate about God and pain and loss in here. It was done in such a was as to not be pedantic, nor preachy.I’ll be honest, I loved this book, but I love TJK. This isn’t sweet and fluffy, it has considerable weight, but it’s well worth the extra pounds. How often do we get MM Romance that reads like literature?
This author... honestly, if you haven't read a TJ Klune book yet, what is stopping you? I have a couple on my TBR list and in my possession that I haven't read and I swear I kick myself every time I finally pick one of them up. This is one of those authors that makes you feel... Every. Single. Time. I can honestly say that I have never walked away from one of this author's books without being in awe of his talent and ability to make me shed a tear... or two... or go through at least half a box of tissues. The amazing thing is that those tears come from laughter just as often as they come from heartbreak... sometimes within the same chapter (occasionally, the same paragraph.) His characters are real - whether they are built on fantasy or reality. Okay, so enough about TJ ('cause I could go on and on and on...) I suppose you want to know about Into This River I Drown...I knew going in that this book was going to be an emotional roller coaster - I'd been warned. It was one of the reasons I had put off reading it for a while after I downloaded it. Even with the trepidation, I still had absolutely no idea... none. The love and devotion that Benji had for Big Eddie was all consuming. Even when there were times that it seemed that Big Eddie may not have been all he seemed, the pain of the loss was a constant thing. Even though he was gone, he was such a huge part of the story he had to be counted as a character - even more than you could imagine at times. Then there was Calliel, who was another larger than life character. Both seemingly innocent and dangerous at the same time. He had a pull on Benji that was hard for him to understand and even harder to ignore. Benji didn't want a relationship and Cal knew he was treading dangerous ground, but somethings are just too precious to give up.There was so much more to this story than the connection between Cal and Benji. There was a lot of danger lurking in the small town of Roseland and the who and the why behind it was... well, you'll just have to read Into This River I Drown to find out. There are things... lots of things, that after reading Into This River I Drown I will never look at quite the same way again. And yes, there were parts that were heartbreaking, even more so than expected. But, in true TJ Klune form, there were also a lot of things that made me smile and even a few that made me laugh. His prose draws you into the story and keeps you there even beyond the last page. I know before I even open a book by this author that I'm going to walk away a little bit emotionally shattered. The realness, the laughter, the utter nonsense make the heartbreak just a little bit easier to take. That may not make much sense, unless you've read one of his books. Once you do, there's no going back.
Benji Green is just an ordinary guy in a small town in the middle of nowhere. He's nobody, in his own estimation, a speck of dust in a big, confusing world. And he misses his Dad, Big Eddie Green. He misses him something fierce. And then something brilliant and blue streaks across the sky one night, and everything changes.I've read all of Klune's other books, and was concerned from some of the comments I've read - not to mention the title and cover - that this would be far different from the quirky, overloaded prose style I've come to appreciate. Well, is and it isn't. But it is surely his most powerful and mature novel to date, and I was moved beyond all expectation by both the characters and by the story this unusual book tells. What starts out as a straightforward story about Benjamin Edward Green, a young man grieving inconsolably over the death of his father in a small town in America's northwest, evolves into a magical realist fantasy wrapped up in a murder mystery inside a love story of epic proportions. A tale of personal grief evolves into a parable of communal love and faith of startling intensity. There is always a certain exhaustion factor in reading Klune's internal dialogues - his characters think too much and that over-thinking becomes part of the narrative. But Benji Green's first-person telling of the tale is eloquent in its sadness and relentless in its consistent forward motion. There are repetitive touchstones in this book, particularly the color blue, used literally and symbolically, and the mournful lyrics of a song Benji's father sang him as a child that makes up the title. But Klune uses these leitmotifs deftly, giving his prose richness and depth, like the refrain of an epic poem. There is an intensity and a constant forward momentum that pulls the reader along with mounting excitement and anxiety towards the penultimate climax - the resolution of the truly gruesome mystery - and then continues to drag us along to the final, equally startling ending. There is a plot-driven link to another of Klune's books - "Burn" - that may confuse readers who have not read it (perhaps not). It seems to set up the entire book to be part of a larger trilogy, although I confess that this sort of threw me for a loop because it seemed to come out of nowhere. While I look forward to seeing how Klune will tie these two novels together, and bring the characters from each into contact; it also was a mild distraction during a particularly intense part of the story. This is a majestic book for a young author, showing a maturation of writing and mastery of narrative that is enviable. I can't wait to see where TJ is going to take us next.
