The author seems to miss some important aspects of the language. He does cover some good points (eg: use BigDecimal over Float) and teaches the value that the Scanner class has to interactive console apps, but a lot of OO stuff is left out, poss'y b/c he thinks it'll put total newbies off the language. But even so, most Java apps are JEE web-based things, or are client-server. Stand-alone Java apps are the exception, not the rule. A 20% on fundamentals, 20% on basic programming (console), then 60% on JEE would have been better for serving the newbie in exposure to current use.But otherwise, it was a good read and the author made the book fun, hence 3 and not 2 stars.
This book seemed to be more of a Java for C Programmers, rather than a Java for Dummies. I guess that's OK, but my son was really hoping for a book that started from square one. So if you're a good programmer in another language, this book will shepherd you through Java differences pretty well. If you only know a language like HTML and want to be able to program applications in Java, not so good.
Easiest way to learn Java. Comprehensive, engaging, no BS. Carefully lays down the foundations before moving ahead to more abstract concepts. Recommended to complete beginners.

It is totally a new book and delivery on time.
I applaud the job that Barry Burd did in writing this book. This book is a good introduction to a programmer looking to be able to program in Java. The book has some good examples that the reader can walk through and experiment with on his/her own. If you are looking to find review questions and other things that a typical textbook used for a college course would have, this isn't the book for you. However, if you're looking for a book that is an easy read (and won't put you to sleep), look no further - this is the one you want.
I love the way the author writes so that he's not talking over the reader's head. I love that he provides sample programs and descriptions and so on. I am immensely overjoyed that he's open to helping his reader's by allowing them to correspond about whatever it is pertaining to his book (and others) on Java that isn't understood/not quite clear. I've been bugging him as I teach myself Java.
